Tensions Continue in Doda After Arrest of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik
Tensions continue in Doda after AAP MLA’s arrest under Public Safety Act.
An uneasy calm prevails in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district as heightened security measures and prohibitory orders continue for the fourth consecutive day following violent clashes sparked by the arrest of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Mehraj Malik under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA). The Doda MLA, detained earlier this week for allegedly disturbing public order through provocative speeches and abusive language on social media, is currently lodged in Kathua jail, intensifying tensions in the region.
While no fresh protests were reported overnight, authorities have bolstered security across Doda town, Bhaderwah, Gandoh, and Thathri, particularly in anticipation of Friday prayers. Concertina wires have been deployed around government offices, and police vehicles are patrolling with announcements urging residents to stay indoors. Mobile internet and Wi-Fi services remain suspended as a precautionary measure, and schools and businesses are closed until Sunday, as ordered by the chief education officer.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Shridhar Patil, who chaired a peace committee meeting on Wednesday, assured the public that the situation is largely under control. “Efforts are on to bring back complete normalcy,” Patil stated, noting that around 40 citizens participated in discussions, offering valuable suggestions. He reported that 60-70 individuals detained during the clashes have been released on bonds, with no casualties recorded. However, eight police personnel, including a deputy superintendent and a station house officer, were injured during the unrest on Monday and Wednesday, when protesters defied restrictions, prompting baton charges.

The district administration has justified Malik’s arrest, citing his critical stance against the government and alleged attempts to disrupt peace. In response, Malik’s father, Shamas Din Malik, who was briefly hospitalized due to stress, appealed for his son’s release, expressing regret for his son’s language and urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to intervene. “I met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who said he would see what he could do,” he added, indicating his reluctance to pursue legal action.
The AAP has condemned the arrest as politically motivated, with MP Sanjay Singh leading protests in Jammu and vowing to fight “injustice” on the streets, in Parliament, and, if necessary, in the Supreme Court. High drama unfolded in Srinagar on Thursday when former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah was prevented from meeting Singh, who was detained at the Circuit House to block a planned protest. PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti described the situation as “deeply disturbing,” criticizing the administration’s imposition of an internet blackout, school closures, and road blockages, which she argued violate fundamental rights.
In Bhaderwah, a semblance of normalcy has returned, with shops and businesses resuming operations. However, the unprecedented detention of a sitting MLA under the PSA, which allows detention without charge for up to two years in some cases, has fueled political controversy and raised concerns about governance and civil liberties in the region.
