Telangana Teen Dies by Suicide; Bandh Called Over Love Jihad Claim

Accused Fasiuddin arrested under POCSO after Narayanpet teenager dies by suicide.

Tension gripped Narayanpet town in Telangana after the death by suicide of a teenage girl triggered protests and a bandh called by leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). The groups alleged that the girl had been deceived and pressured to change her religion by a youth from another community, claims that police have not confirmed and are continuing to investigate.

According to police, the accused, Fasiuddin, 18, has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. Authorities have registered a case against him under provisions related to abetment of suicide as well as sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) Act.

The bandh affected normal life across Narayanpet, with several shops and business establishments remaining closed. BJP and VHP activists gathered near the regional transport depot and attempted to block bus services. Police intervened to prevent disruptions and detained several protesters during the demonstration.

Right-wing leaders alleged that the incident was linked to what they described as “love jihad,” claiming the accused had initially promised marriage to gain the trust of the girl and her family before allegedly pressuring her to convert. Senior BJP leader Nagurao Namaji also alleged that the teenager was subjected to blackmail before her death and demanded a thorough investigation and strict action against anyone found responsible.

Protesters called for a speedy investigation, strong punishment if the allegations are proven, and enhanced measures to protect young women from exploitation. Meanwhile, police said the situation remained under control and urged residents not to spread rumors or unverified claims. Authorities emphasized that the allegations surrounding religious conversion and coercion have not been established and remain part of the ongoing investigation.
