Telangana High Court Seeks CBI Probe Into Indiramma Housing Corruption Allegations

Telangana HC acts on widow's letter alleging widespread housing scheme irregularities.

The Telangana High Court on Friday took up a suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL) alleging large-scale corruption and irregularities in the implementation of the state government’s flagship Indiramma Housing scheme, which is aimed at providing houses to economically weaker sections. The court sought responses from the Telangana government authorities as well as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the allegations. After briefly hearing the matter, the court adjourned the proceedings and scheduled the next hearing for three weeks later.

The PIL was initiated by the court based on a letter addressed to the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court by Thippala Saibhavani, a widow from the Mulugu district. In her letter, Saibhavani alleged serious irregularities in the allotment of houses under the Indiramma Housing scheme and requested an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation. Taking note of the gravity of the allegations raised in the communication, the High Court treated the letter as a public interest plea and decided to examine the matter formally.

The case was heard by a Division Bench comprising Justice P. Sam Koshy and Justice Narsing Rao Nandikonda. During the proceedings, the bench sought responses from the concerned authorities to clarify the allegations raised in the petition. The court’s decision to involve both state authorities and the CBI indicates the seriousness with which it is approaching the matter, given the potential impact of the alleged irregularities on a major welfare scheme.

Indiramma Housing is one of the flagship initiatives of the Telangana government aimed at addressing the housing needs of economically weaker sections and vulnerable communities. The scheme was introduced to provide financial assistance and support for the construction of houses for eligible beneficiaries across the state, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where housing shortages remain a pressing issue.

Allegations of corruption or irregularities in the implementation of such schemes can significantly affect the intended beneficiaries, many of whom rely on government assistance to secure basic housing. Concerns over improper allotments, misuse of funds, or favouritism in beneficiary selection have occasionally surfaced in welfare programmes, prompting calls for stricter oversight and transparency in implementation.

With the High Court now seeking detailed responses from both the state authorities and the CBI, the coming hearings are expected to shed more light on the allegations raised in the PIL. The court’s intervention could potentially lead to further investigation or reforms in the implementation process if irregularities are found, as the judiciary continues to scrutinise issues related to governance and public welfare schemes.
