A habitual offender fatally stabbed a constable during transit.
A tragic incident unfolded in Nizamabad city, Telangana, late Thursday evening, when a 42-year-old police constable, E Pramod, was fatally stabbed by a habitual offender, Shaik Riyaz, aged 24, while being transported to a police station. The attack, which occurred between 8:30 PM and 9:00 PM on October 17, has sent shockwaves through the state’s law enforcement community and sparked a massive manhunt for the perpetrator.
According to police reports, Constable Pramod, stationed at the Central Crime Station (CCS) of the Nizamabad Police Commissionerate, was escorting Riyaz, a suspect linked to robbery, dacoity, and murder cases, on a two-wheeler to the police station. Without warning, Riyaz allegedly produced a knife and stabbed Pramod in the chest, inflicting fatal wounds. The assailant also attacked a Sub-Inspector trailing the constable’s vehicle, injuring his fingers, before fleeing the scene under the cover of darkness.
The brutal assault has drawn sharp condemnation from Telangana’s top law enforcement officials. Director General of Police (DGP) B Shivadhar Reddy expressed profound grief and ordered the immediate formation of eight special teams to apprehend Riyaz. He directed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Multi Zone-I, S Chandrashekhar Reddy, to oversee operations in Nizamabad and provide support to Pramod’s grieving family, ensuring all necessary assistance is extended.

Nizamabad Police Commissioner P Sai Chaitanya, addressing the media, described the incident as a tragic loss and highlighted a disturbing lack of public assistance at the scene. “Bystanders were busy taking photos instead of helping transport the injured constable to a hospital,” he lamented, noting that even auto-rickshaws refused to assist the wounded Sub-Inspector’s pleas for help. The police have since registered a murder case and intensified investigations to uncover the full circumstances of the attack.
To aid in capturing Riyaz, authorities have announced a ₹50,000 cash reward for credible information leading to his identification, location, or arrest. Citizens are urged to contact ‘Dial 100’ or dedicated hotlines (8712659793 / 8712659777), with assurances that informants’ identities will remain confidential.
The incident has reignited concerns about the safety of law enforcement officers in Telangana, where rising crime rates have strained police resources. The department has vowed unwavering support for Pramod’s family, pledging to deliver justice swiftly. As the manhunt intensifies, the tragedy underscores the perilous risks faced by officers in the line of duty and the urgent need for public cooperation in times of crisis.
