The incident has been reported amid heightened concern over a series of crimes against women in Tamil Nadu. The issue has triggered political exchanges between the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam and opposition parties, with women’s safety emerging as a major law-and-order concern. The government has rejected allegations that it has failed to adequately protect women.
The state government recently announced a dedicated women’s police force named Singappen, aimed at strengthening women’s safety and improving the police response to crimes against women. Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has also directed district Collectors and Superintendents of Police to give the highest priority to women’s safety and intensify action against narcotics.
The Chief Minister has linked the increase in certain crimes to what he described as unrestricted drug abuse during the previous DMK government, an allegation that has added to the political debate. Meanwhile, investigators in the Tirupathur case are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and verify the accused’s medical history as the legal process moves forward.
