Tamil Nadu Eateries To Get Rs 2/Unit Power Subsidy, says Chief Minister M.K. Stalin
Tamil Nadu provides power subsidy to eateries amid LPG crisis.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced a Rs 2 per unit electricity subsidy for eateries switching from LPG to electric stoves on March 14, 2026, addressing an acute commercial LPG crisis triggered by the ongoing Gulf conflict. The decision emerged from a high-level review meeting at the state secretariat, focusing on disruptions to industries and food businesses due to restricted LPG supplies prioritized by the central government for hospitals and educational institutions. Restaurants, tea shops, cloud kitchens, and other food units adopting induction stoves or electric equipment qualify for the subsidy on additional power consumed, effective until central restrictions lift.
This measure responds to widespread shortages since late February 2026, as the U.S.-Iran war disrupts global energy shipments, causing commercial cylinder rationing and supply chain bottlenecks in southern India. Eateries have slashed menus, curtailed operations, and removed gas-intensive items like fried foods to conserve dwindling stocks, with many urging government intervention.

Stalin directed subsidized loans for MSMEs to purchase electric stoves and heaters, alongside TNPCB exemptions from pollution norms for alternative fuels during the crisis. A state-level committee under the Chief Secretary will oversee LPG allocation to essential commercial users, balancing industrial needs with power grid capacity.
The subsidy aims to sustain thousands of small businesses in Tamil Nadu, a hub for hospitality and street food, amid soaring costs and operational halts. Industry groups welcomed the relief but seek faster implementation and extended timelines.
