Tahir Hussain Sentenced To Life Imprisonment In Ankit Sharma Murder Case Linked To Delhi Riots

A Delhi court on Friday sentenced former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain and four others to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) official Ankit Sharma during the Northeast Delhi riots in 2020. The order was pronounced by Additional Sessions Judge Parveen Singh at the Karkardooma Courts. The court’s decision came after Hussain and the other accused were convicted in the case related to Sharma’s killing during the communal violence that broke out in parts of Northeast Delhi in February 2020. The riots had resulted in multiple deaths and injuries, with several cases registered by Delhi Police.

While pronouncing the sentence, the court observed that the crime was brutal and involved a violent mob attack. However, the judge noted that the prosecution had not established that the convicts were beyond reform or that their continued presence in society would pose a threat after serving imprisonment. The court’s remarks came while deciding the quantum of punishment after the conviction. The prosecution had sought the maximum punishment of capital sentence for Hussain and the other convicts, describing the killing as exceptionally brutal and arguing that it fell under the “rarest of rare” category.

Delhi Police had argued that the murder of Ankit Sharma was carried out in a particularly violent manner and warranted the death penalty. The prosecution highlighted the circumstances of the crime while seeking the strictest possible punishment for those convicted. The court, however, awarded life imprisonment, taking into account the legal requirement to assess whether the case met the threshold for capital punishment. The judge observed that while the nature of the offence was serious, the prosecution had not sufficiently demonstrated that the convicts could not be reformed.

Ankit Sharma, who worked as an IB security assistant, was found dead during the violence in Northeast Delhi in February 2020. His death became one of the most prominent cases linked to the riots, leading to a prolonged investigation and trial. The case was investigated by Delhi Police, which filed charges against several accused persons. During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence related to the events surrounding Sharma’s death and the alleged involvement of the accused. Tahir Hussain, who was a councillor with the Aam Aadmi Party at the time of the riots, has denied allegations of involvement in the violence.

His name emerged in multiple cases connected to the Northeast Delhi riots, leading to legal proceedings against him. The verdict marks a significant development in one of the high-profile cases arising from the 2020 Delhi violence. The sentencing proceedings followed the court’s earlier conviction order against Hussain and the other accused. The case remains subject to further legal processes, including possible appeals before higher courts.
