SUV-Truck Collision In Odisha: Five Killed, Seven Injured In Jajpur Crash
SUV crash into truck in Odisha’s Jajpur leaves five dead, seven injured.
At least five people, including two women, were killed and seven others injured after a sport utility vehicle (SUV) rammed into a truck in Odisha’s Jajpur district on Monday, police officials said. The accident occurred near Barada Chhak on the Daitary–Paradeep express highway under the jurisdiction of Jenapur police station, highlighting ongoing concerns over road safety on busy highways in the region.
According to preliminary findings, the SUV was carrying 12 passengers, including three women and two children, who were returning home after attending a wedding ceremony in Keonjhar district. Police said the vehicle collided with a truck from behind, though the exact circumstances leading to the crash are yet to be fully established. Investigators are examining whether factors such as speed, driver fatigue, or low visibility contributed to the accident.
The impact of the collision was severe, with the SUV getting wedged underneath the truck. Five occupants died on the spot due to the force of the crash, while the remaining seven sustained serious injuries. The caused panic among local residents and prompted immediate rescue efforts by passersby and emergency responders, who worked to pull the victims out of the wreckage.
The injured were initially taken to nearby community health centres in Dharmasala and Badachana for urgent medical attention. However, as their condition deteriorated, all seven were later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced treatment. Hospital authorities have not yet released detailed updates on their current condition, but sources indicated that several of the injured remain critical.
Police identified the victims as residents of Purusottampur-Sanjaya Nagar village. Nirupama Jena, inspector in charge of Jenapur police station, confirmed that the group was on its way back home when the accident occurred. She added that the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the collision, complicating initial efforts to determine accountability.
A case has been registered, and a manhunt is underway to trace the truck and its driver. Authorities have launched a detailed investigation to establish the sequence of events and identify any lapses that may have led to the crash. The incident adds to a growing list of fatal road accidents in Odisha, prompting renewed calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and improved highway safety measures.
