Suspected IED Blasts at Abandoned House in Manipur’s Bishnupur, Two Injured
IED explosions injure two amid lingering ethnic tensions.
Two consecutive explosions struck Bishnupur district in Manipur on January 5, 2026, resulting in splinter injuries to two individuals. Authorities suspect the blasts were triggered by improvised explosive devices, highlighting persistent security challenges in the region affected by prolonged ethnic unrest.
The initial detonation occurred around 5:45 a.m. at an abandoned residence in Ngaukon village, under the jurisdiction of Phougakchao police station. The house has stood vacant since the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023, with its owner and family displaced to a relief camp, underscoring the enduring impact of the conflict on local communities.
A second explosion followed approximately three hours later, at about 8:45 a.m., roughly 200 meters from the first site. This blast took place as residents converged on the area following reports of the earlier incident, leading to injuries sustained by Soibam Sanatomba Singh, aged 52, and Indubala Devi, aged 37, primarily from shrapnel to their legs.

Both victims received immediate medical attention at a nearby hospital, where their conditions were reported as stable and non-life-threatening. The incident prompted swift response from law enforcement, who secured the area and initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the placements of the devices.
The affected zone in Phougakchao remains sensitive, having been among the earliest impacted by the ethnic clashes. Recent efforts to resettle displaced persons along the Bishnupur-Churachandpur border have proceeded cautiously, yet incidents like this underscore ongoing vulnerabilities and the need for enhanced vigilance in the region.
