Suryakumar Says Indo-Pak Matches No Longer A True Rivalry

The Indian skipper dismisses Indo-Pak contests as one-sided, not genuine cricket rivalry.

Indian Cricket Captain Suryakumar Yadav dismissed the notion of a “rivalry” between India and Pakistan following a commanding six-wicket victory in the Asia Cup Super 4 match on September 21. The emphatic win, which saw India chase down Pakistan’s total with ease, underscored India’s dominance in their head-to-head record, having won 12 of 15 T20 International encounters. Yadav’s remarks came during a post-match press conference in Dubai, where he urged fans and media to reconsider labeling the contests as a meaningful rivalry.

Responding to a question from a Pakistani journalist about the growing gap in team standards, Yadav quipped, “Sir, my request is that we should now stop calling India vs Pakistan matches a rivalry.” He elaborated with a smile, suggesting that a true rivalry implies a closer contest, such as an 8-7 record, rather than India’s lopsided 12-3 advantage in T20Is. His candid comments sparked discussions among fans, given the historic intensity surrounding India-Pakistan cricket matches, often fueled by political and cultural tensions.

The Asia Cup match highlighted India’s superior form, with their batting and bowling units outclassing Pakistan. Yadav’s leadership, combined with India’s recent T20 World Championship title, has solidified their position as a global powerhouse. Pakistan, meanwhile, struggled to match India’s intensity, raising questions about their current form in the tournament. The match, watched by millions, was a reminder of India’s consistent edge in recent years, with their last T20I loss to Pakistan occurring in 2021.

The next clash between the two sides will likely draw massive attention, regardless of how it’s labeled.
