Supreme Court Informed CBI May Take Over Twisha Sharma Death Investigation Within A Day

Supreme Court informed CBI likely to take over Twisha Sharma death probe soon.

The Supreme Court on Monday was informed that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is likely to take over within a day the probe into the unnatural death of 32-year-old actor-model Twisha Sharma at her matrimonial home in Madhya Pradesh. The development comes amid allegations of procedural lapses, institutional bias, and concerns over the fairness of the ongoing investigation.

A bench comprising Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice Vipul M. Pancholi recorded the Madhya Pradesh government’s submission that it had already written to the Centre recommending a CBI investigation into the case. The matter is being heard in the backdrop of heightened public scrutiny and competing narratives surrounding the circumstances of Sharma’s death.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the state, informed the court that a notification from the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) enabling the CBI to formally assume charge of the investigation was expected to be issued within the day. The bench noted that the investigation must be conducted in a fair and dispassionate manner and urged all parties to refrain from public commentary that could influence the ongoing probe.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court also addressed concerns over the growing public discourse around the case, including allegations that the judiciary was being drawn into controversy due to the involvement of individuals connected to the legal fraternity. The bench stressed that such narratives were unfortunate and emphasized the need to preserve institutional integrity while ensuring a credible investigation.

The court further remarked that while it had no doubt about the competence of the state police, an independent investigation by the CBI would help strengthen public confidence in the findings. It also cautioned the media against broadcasting statements of potential witnesses, noting that premature disclosures could affect the integrity of the investigation.

The case, registered suo motu by the apex court as “In Re: Alleged institutional bias and procedural discrepancies in the unnatural death of a young girl at her matrimonial home,” continues to be closely monitored as the transition of the investigation to the CBI is expected to be completed shortly.
