Southern Railway Grants Additional Stoppages to 103 Trains Across Tamil Nadu and Kerala
Over 100 new halts to ease travel in delta, southern districts, and suburbs from January 26.
Southern Railway has responded to longstanding passenger demands by announcing additional stoppages for 103 express and passenger trains at 109 stations across Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The revised schedule, detailed in an order dated January 21, will take effect in phases: from January 26 for more than 50 trains, and on January 27, 28, and February 2 for the remaining services. Of the new halts, 20 are in Kerala, with the majority benefiting stations in Tamil Nadu, particularly in the delta region, southern districts, and Chennai suburbs.
The decision includes stoppages for several high-demand trains, expanding connectivity to smaller towns and municipalities. Notable additions include halts for the Tambaram-Sengottai Superfast Express at Chengalpattu, Sivaganga, and Peravurani in both directions, and for the Tambaram-Nagercoil Antyodaya Express at Manapparai, Tirumangalam, and Nanguneri. Passengers traveling to Renigunta from North Chennai can now board the Kacheguda Express directly at Perambur instead of traveling to Chennai Egmore, with two-minute stops also added at Perambur for the Chengalpattu-Kacheguda and Puducherry-Kacheguda Express trains.
Regular commuters have welcomed the changes, especially the new halt for the Coimbatore-Chennai Kovai Express at Tiruvallur. Previously, passengers from Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Salem had to alight at Arakkonam late at night and switch to a local train, often facing inconvenience if they missed the last service. “This will significantly reduce hardship for daily and weekly travelers,” said K Sivarajan, a Tiruvallur resident.

In and around Chennai, additional stops have been introduced at Perambur, Ambattur, Basin Bridge, Wimco Nagar, and Chengalpattu. The delta region gains improved access through halts at Adhiramapattinam, Muthupet, Tiruchy, Peravurani, Manapparai, Chidambaram, and Vaitheeswaran Koil, benefiting commuters in these areas.
The move is expected to enhance rail accessibility for smaller towns and reduce travel disruptions for thousands of passengers, reflecting Southern Railway’s efforts to address regional travel needs through targeted stoppage enhancements.
