SIT Takes Over Probe in NEET Aspirant's Suspicious Death at Patna Hostel

SIT intensifies probe into suspicious death of NEET aspirant at Patna girls' hostel amid sexual assault allegations.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has stepped up its probe into the suspicious death of a NEET aspirant at Shambhu Girls’ Hostel in Patna, following rising criticism of the city police and Bihar government’s handling of the case. The team was constituted on the instructions of State Home Minister Samrat Choudhary, with Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar directing a thorough investigation.

The SIT is being personally chaired by Patna Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jitendra Rana, who visited the hostel on Saturday to inspect the crime scene. All members of the SIT, including senior and field officers, were present during the visit. IGP Rana emphasized that anyone found guilty would face stringent action without exception, underscoring the seriousness of the investigation.

The incident came to light when the student, hailing from Jehanabad district and preparing for the NEET medical entrance exam, was found unconscious in her hostel room. She was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries on January 11. Her family alleged that she had been sexually assaulted, sparking immediate public outrage and calls for accountability.

Initially, senior Patna police officers, including the Assistant Superintendent of Police and Senior Superintendent of Police, expressed hesitation in accepting the allegation, citing a lack of conclusive evidence pending the post-mortem report. However, the post-mortem later indicated that sexual assault could not be ruled out, raising serious questions about the initial response of the authorities.

In response to these developments, DGP Vinay Kumar ordered the creation of the SIT under IGP Jitendra Rana’s leadership to ensure a fair and impartial investigation. The team includes Patna SP (East) Parichay Kumar, a female DSP, a female Inspector, a male Inspector, a Sub-Inspector, an Assistant Sub-Inspector, and several constables, highlighting the emphasis on both gender sensitivity and thoroughness in the inquiry.

As the SIT intensifies its efforts, public attention remains focused on the investigation’s progress, with calls for justice for the victim growing louder. Authorities have pledged transparency and swift action, emphasizing that negligence or lapses by officials will not be tolerated.
