Sirohi Collector Orders Inquiry After Hostel Girls Allege Poor Conditions

Tribal hostel students allege food, cleanliness issues; probe ordered.

Around 50 students from a Tribal Girls’ Hostel in Sirohi, Rajasthan, walked to the District Collectorate on Monday to raise complaints about food quality, cleanliness, living conditions and the behaviour of the hostel warden. The students alleged that they had been facing problems at the hostel for a considerable period and said their concerns had not been adequately addressed. Their complaints prompted District Collector Rohitashva Singh Tomar to personally hear their grievances and order an inquiry into the allegations.

The students’ primary concern was the quality of food being served at the hostel. They alleged that worms had been found in their meals, raising concerns about food safety and hygiene. The girls also complained about poor cleanliness inside the hostel and inadequate living conditions and basic amenities. They said the problems had affected their daily life and prompted them to approach the district administration directly rather than continue to deal with the issues at the hostel level.

The students also alleged that the hostel warden behaved inappropriately when they raised concerns about the food and other facilities. The allegations were presented directly to Collector Tomar when the students reached the Collectorate. The Collector reportedly spent around an hour listening to the girls and took their complaints seriously. The administration has now begun steps to establish whether the allegations regarding food, sanitation, accommodation and the warden’s conduct are supported by facts.

Following the meeting, Collector Tomar summoned the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Tehsildar and Assistant District Project Coordinator of the Education Department. He directed the officials to conduct a thorough investigation into the complaints raised by the students. An inquiry committee was also ordered to be formed immediately to examine the conditions at the hostel and verify the students’ allegations regarding food quality, cleanliness and other facilities.

The administration also made arrangements to ensure that the students returned safely to the hostel after their meeting with the Collector. According to the report, around four government vehicles were used to transport the students back. The move followed the Collector’s instructions after the students had completed their representation at the District Collectorate. The inquiry is expected to determine whether corrective action is required to address the issues raised by the hostel residents.

The incident has highlighted concerns raised by students over basic facilities and food safety in residential educational institutions. While the allegations made by the students are yet to be independently established, the district administration has ordered an official inquiry to ascertain the facts. The committee will examine the hostel’s conditions and the complaints made by the girls, after which further action can be considered based on its findings.
