Silchar Journalist Assaulted Media Office Vandalised Amid Rising Press Threats

Journalist assaulted and media office attacked in Assam’s Silchar.

A journalist was allegedly assaulted and a media office vandalised in Silchar, Assam, on Thursday evening, raising fresh concerns over the safety of reporters in the Barak Valley region. The incident reportedly took place at a media office located on Second Link Road, where 25-year-old journalist Raju Das, associated with Bengali news platform Barak Bani, was attacked by a group of unidentified men.

According to police and complaint details, the accused initially contacted the journalist over the phone before arriving at the office under the pretext of discussing an issue. Once inside the premises, they allegedly assaulted him and caused damage to office property, including furniture and other equipment. Das sustained head injuries and was later admitted to a hospital in Silchar for treatment.

The management of Barak Bani claimed that the journalist had previously received threats linked to his reporting on alleged illegal activities, including betting and gambling networks. However, police officials have stated that they are still investigating whether the attack was directly related to his professional work or stemmed from other motives.

Investigators are also awaiting the journalist’s formal statement once medical clearance is obtained.

The incident has triggered strong reactions from journalist associations, civil society groups and local residents, many of whom have demanded swift action against those responsible. Media organisations in the region have expressed concern over what they describe as increasing threats to press freedom and reporter safety in Assam.

The Silchar Press Club has condemned the attack and announced plans to stage a protest, calling for stronger protective measures for journalists. Police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and further action will be taken based on emerging evidence.
