A 13-year-old girl, the daughter of migrant laborers from Uttar Pradesh, was allegedly abducted and raped by a man in a village in Hoshiarpur district, police reported on Tuesday. The horrific incident, which unfolded on February 10, has sparked outrage, with the accused still evading capture while his mother, who threatened the victim’s family, has been arrested.
The girl’s family, settled in a rented house in Hoshiarpur for seven years, faced this nightmare when she was alone at home. The accused, a resident of the same village, allegedly kidnapped her and took her to his residence, where he raped her. He then kept her hidden at multiple locations, using threats to prevent her from seeking help. Her father tirelessly searched for her, eventually rescuing her from a Dera in Nawanshahr district. Upon returning home, the traumatized girl revealed the assault to her mother.
The accused’s mother escalated the family’s distress by threatening them with dire consequences if they reported the crime. Undeterred, the victim’s parents approached the authorities, leading to her arrest. Sub-Inspector Jagjit Singh, SHO of Chabbewal Police Station, stated that a case has been filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for kidnapping and rape, alongside the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, reflecting the gravity of the offense against a minor. Efforts to apprehend the primary suspect are intensifying, though he remains absconding.
The case highlights the vulnerability of migrant families and the challenges of ensuring justice in rural settings. Police are investigating the sequence of events, including the locations where the girl was held captive, to build a watertight case. As the manhunt continues, the incident underscores the urgent need for community vigilance and swift law enforcement action to protect the vulnerable and punish perpetrators in India's hinterlands. Further updates are awaited as the investigation progresses.
