Shantanu Narayen Built Adobe into a Global Giant. Now He is Walking Away
Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen announces exit after 18 years and will remain board chair.
Shantanu Narayen, the longtime chief executive of Adobe, has announced plans to step down from his role after leading the global software company for nearly two decades. The 62-year-old Indian-American executive said he would work closely with the board during the leadership transition while remaining associated with the company as chairman. His decision marks the end of an 18-year tenure widely credited with transforming Adobe into one of the world’s most influential digital software firms.
Narayen’s announcement comes at a time when technology companies are reassessing their strategies amid rapid advances in artificial intelligence. Industry observers say the shift toward AI-driven tools has intensified competition and raised questions about how legacy software platforms will evolve. Despite these challenges, Narayen expressed confidence in Adobe’s long-term prospects and told employees that the company’s strongest years could still lie ahead.
In a message to staff, Narayen described the transition as a moment of reflection rather than a farewell. He said he would help prepare the company for its next phase by supporting the appointment of a new chief executive and strengthening the leadership team. He also emphasized the company’s ongoing strategic goals, noting that Adobe would continue focusing on its fiscal-year priorities while building for the future.

Narayen joined Adobe in 1998 as vice president and general manager of its engineering technology group. He rose through the ranks quickly, becoming president and chief operating officer in 2005 before taking over as chief executive in 2007. A decade later, he was appointed chairman of the company. During his tenure, Adobe expanded the reach of its flagship creative software products such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, and InDesign, helping cement its dominance in digital design and media tools.
Beyond Adobe, Narayen has played an active role in international business and policy circles. He serves as vice chairman of the US‑India Strategic Partnership Forum and sits on the board of Pfizer. Earlier in his career, he served as a director of Dell and was a member of the US President’s Management Advisory Board, contributing to discussions on innovation and economic policy.
Born in India, Narayen studied electronics engineering at Osmania University before moving to the United States for higher education. He earned a master’s degree in computer science from Bowling Green State University and later completed an MBA at University of California, Berkeley. Over the years he has received several recognitions, including the Padma Shri and the Economic Times Global Indian of the Year honour in 2018 for his contributions to the technology industry.
