Security Forces Arrest Two Foreign Nationals At Raxaul Border For Illegal Entry

Two foreign nationals arrested after illegal entry through Raxaul border area.

Police in Bihar’s East Champaran district have arrested two foreign nationals—a woman from Switzerland and a man from Myanmar—for allegedly entering India illegally through the Raxaul border under Haraiya police station limits. The arrests were made after local police spotted the duo moving under suspicious circumstances near Custom Chowk. Officials said preliminary checks revealed that the individuals were unable to produce valid travel documents, including passports and visas, leading to their detention under provisions of the Foreigners Act.

According to the Station House Officer of Haraiya police station, Kishan Paswan, the absence of valid documentation constituted a violation of Indian immigration laws. “Neither of the foreign nationals possessed any valid travel documents. Entering India without a visa or passport is a violation of the Foreigners Act. Both have been arrested,” he said. Police said the detained individuals were questioned but were unable to clearly explain the purpose of their visit or provide details about the route they took to enter India. Investigators are now working to determine whether they crossed into India via Nepal or through another border point, given the porous nature of the India–Nepal border in the region.

Authorities have also begun examining whether the two individuals may have any links to suspicious activity, although no such connection has been established so far. Intelligence agencies have been informed, and inputs are being collected from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and immigration authorities as part of the ongoing investigation. Officials noted that the Raxaul border region frequently witnesses cases of undocumented cross-border movement due to its relatively open terrain and high volume of local and transnational travel. As a result, security agencies maintain heightened vigilance in the area, especially near key transit points and customs checkpoints.

This is not the first such incident in the region. In September last year, police arrested five foreign nationals—including four Sudanese citizens and one Bolivian—in similar circumstances in the same area. In another case, 11 foreign nationals, including four Chinese citizens and an individual allegedly linked to the Khalistan movement, were detained for attempting to enter India from Nepal without proper documentation. The latest arrests have prompted renewed scrutiny of border management and monitoring systems along the Indo-Nepal frontier. Authorities are expected to continue questioning the detained individuals while verifying their identities and travel history before deciding on further legal action.
