Sandeshkhali: Prime Witness Bhola Ghosh Injured in Suspected Attack, Son and Driver Die

Key witness survives horrific truck attack that killed son and driver en route to court.

In a brazen assault that has reignited fears of witness intimidation in the explosive Sandeshkhali cases, prime witness Bholanath Ghosh — popularly known as Bhola Ghosh — narrowly escaped death on Wednesday morning when a speeding truck deliberately rammed his car on the Basanti Highway, instantly killing his 32-year-old younger son Satyajit Ghosh and 27-year-old driver Sahanur Molla.

The former close confidant of suspended Trinamool Congress strongman Sheikh Shahjahan until 2020 was heading to Basirhat sub-divisional court to depose in one of multiple ongoing cases against the jailed leader, including the high-profile January 2024 mob attack on Enforcement Directorate officials during raids on Shahjahan’s premises.

Eyewitness accounts and Ghosh’s own statement describe a calculated hit: as the car crossed Boyarbari area around 9:20 am, the oncoming truck veered sharply into their lane at full speed, dragged the vehicle for several metres, and shoved it into a roadside water body before halting precariously on the embankment. The unidentified driver fled immediately, while local residents rushed the critically injured Ghosh to hospital before transfer to a private facility in Kolkata for specialised treatment.

From his hospital bed, the gravely injured witness has lodged a detailed complaint naming eight persons, including truck driver Alim Molla — whom he claims to have recognised wearing a black sweater — and accomplices who allegedly facilitated the escape. Ghosh asserted that motorcycles had been shadowing his vehicle from home and that he had received explicit death threats from Shahjahan’s associates exactly seven days prior, leaving no doubt about the motive to eliminate him before crucial testimony.

Accusing Sheikh Shahjahan of orchestrating the “conspiracy to murder” from behind bars, Ghosh declared that the jailed TMC leader remains determined to silence all voices exposing his alleged reign of terror in Sandeshkhali involving land grabbing, sexual exploitation, and violent intimidation. Authorities have registered a case of criminal conspiracy and murder, with investigations intensifying amid demands for enhanced protection to witnesses in one of West Bengal’s most politically charged scandals.
