Sagar Hooch Tragedy: Spurious Liquor Death Toll at 12; 14 Arrested, UP's Lalitpur Link Probed

The death toll in the suspected spurious liquor tragedy in Sagar district has risen to 12, while nearly 30 people remain under medical observation. Two of those receiving treatment are reportedly in critical condition. The incident occurred in two villages of Banda tehsil, around 30 kilometres from the Sagar district headquarters, after residents allegedly consumed illicit liquor.

Police have arrested 14 of the 30 people named as accused in three FIRs registered following complaints from victims' family members. Authorities have launched a wider crackdown on suspected bootleggers in the area. Police and excise teams are working to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects as the investigation continues.

The affected residents reportedly experienced symptoms including blurred vision and dizziness after consuming the suspected spurious liquor. One critically ill person was airlifted to Bhopal for advanced medical treatment. Officials said health teams were continuing to monitor those affected, while people who consumed liquor and developed symptoms such as vomiting, headaches or fever were urged to immediately seek medical attention.

Authorities are also investigating a suspected supply connection with Lalitpur in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh. Police officials said preliminary findings pointed towards a possible network operating from the area, with the liquor allegedly reaching villages in Sagar through a local supply chain. Three special FIRs have been registered, while investigators are examining evidence and questioning those arrested to establish the source of the liquor.

The administration has taken action against officials following the tragedy, with three excise officials and two police personnel suspended in connection with the incident. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has ordered an inquiry and said those responsible would face action. Revenue officials, police teams and village representatives have also been conducting door-to-door checks to identify people who may have consumed the suspected liquor.

With the toll reaching 12, authorities are focusing on the treatment of those still under observation, tracking the remaining accused and determining how the suspected spurious liquor entered the affected villages. The investigation is also examining the alleged Lalitpur connection and the role of local suppliers as the crackdown on illegal liquor networks continues.
