Russia Ready to Supply India 'As Much Oil as Needed' Amid US Tariff Threats

Russia has said it remains ready to supply India with as much crude oil as the country needs, as pressure from the United States over New Delhi's purchases of Russian energy continues. Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov criticised what he described as US “pressure tactics” and said Moscow remains willing to maintain energy cooperation with New Delhi despite potential trade and sanctions-related challenges.

Speaking about the issue, Alipov said Russia could continue supplying oil to India according to its requirements. He argued that countries imposing sanctions and tariffs were relying on pressure rather than cooperation, making it difficult for them to offer India terms that could compete with Russian crude. His comments underline Moscow's intention to preserve its position as an important energy supplier to the Indian market.

The dispute comes amid efforts by the United States under President Donald Trump to discourage countries from purchasing Russian oil. Washington has already imposed an additional tariff on Indian goods linked to New Delhi's continued purchases of Russian crude, while discussions in the US Senate have included proposals for tariffs of up to 100 per cent on major buyers of Russian oil and natural gas.

India, along with countries including China and Turkey, could be affected by any expanded measures targeting buyers of Russian energy. The proposed restrictions are linked to efforts to increase economic pressure on Moscow over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, disruptions in global energy supplies have also complicated attempts to significantly reduce the availability of Russian crude in international markets.

Alipov warned that removing Russian oil from the global market would create wider problems for energy consumers. He said Russian crude would continue to remain available to India and other countries, stressing that Moscow wants to supply the Indian market while India remains interested in purchasing the oil. His remarks reflect the importance both sides place on maintaining their long-standing energy relationship.

India has maintained that its energy decisions are guided by domestic requirements and changing market conditions. New Delhi has repeatedly emphasised the need to protect national interests while navigating shifting global energy and geopolitical circumstances. The latest Russian comments indicate that Moscow intends to continue offering crude to India, even as the possibility of additional US tariffs and sanctions creates uncertainty around future trade.
