Refused Money for Alcohol, Odisha Man Sets Own Mother on Fire

Odisha man pours petrol and sets 65-year-old mother on fire after she refuses money for liquor.

In a horrifying incident in Odisha’s Bhadrak district, an elderly woman was severely injured after her son allegedly set her on fire following a dispute over money for alcohol. The attack occurred at Galaganda village under Tihidi police limits on Thursday, leaving the local community in shock. Police confirmed that the accused, identified as 45-year-old Debashish Nayak, fled the scene immediately after the assault.

According to preliminary reports, Debashish had demanded money from his mother, Jyotsnarani Nayak, aged 65, to purchase liquor. When she refused, he allegedly attacked her and, after she collapsed, poured petrol over her and set her ablaze. Neighbors rushed to the scene upon hearing her screams, but the accused managed to escape before police could detain him.

The injured woman was initially taken to Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital for emergency treatment. However, as her condition worsened, she was transferred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for specialized care, police officials said. Authorities are closely monitoring her condition.

Local residents described the incident as shocking but not entirely unexpected, given the strained relationship between mother and son. “Arguments between Debashish and his mother were common, but we never imagined it would escalate to such brutality,” said neighbor Subrata Nayak, expressing disbelief at the act.

Police have launched a search to apprehend Debashish, who is known to have a history of substance abuse. Tihidi police station in-charge Satyabrata Graharaj confirmed that an investigation is underway to ensure the accused is brought to justice.

This incident has raised concerns over domestic violence and substance abuse in rural communities. Authorities have urged neighbors and relatives to report any signs of abuse or erratic behavior to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
