Rajasthan Funeral Turns Tragic As Three Drown In River

After cremation, three mourners drowned while bathing in the river during funeral rites.

A funeral ceremony in Rajasthan's Bhilwara district turned into a double tragedy on Monday when three men drowned while bathing in the Khari River shortly after the cremation of four victims from a fatal car accident in Jaipur. The incident, which occurred in Fuliya Kala village, has left the community reeling from back-to-back losses, with four other individuals rescued but three of them in serious condition. Local authorities have ordered an inquiry into the mishap, highlighting the dangers of river access during rituals.

The cremation was held for four members of two families who perished in a horrific crash late Saturday in Jaipur's Shivdaspura police station area. The victims, returning from Haridwar after performing last rites for a relative, were traveling in a car that lost control, struck a divider, and plunged approximately 16 feet into a waterlogged underpass on the Ring Road. Three others in the vehicle sustained injuries but survived. The accident, which claimed seven lives overall from the two families, underscored the perils of night driving in urban areas prone to flooding during monsoons.

Following the cremation, mourners, including relatives and villagers, proceeded to the nearby Khari River for a traditional post-ritual bath. Strong currents reportedly swept away the three men—whose identities have not yet been released—leading to the drownings. Rescue operations involving local police and villagers saved four others who had ventured into the water, though the critically injured were rushed to a nearby hospital. Bhilwara Superintendent of Police and district officials visited the site and the medical facility to console the bereaved families.

This heartbreaking sequence of events has intensified calls for improved safety measures around rivers in rural Rajasthan, where such post-funeral immersions are a common Hindu practice. As the state grapples with monsoon-related hazards, the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life amid grief, with authorities vowing a thorough probe to prevent future occurrences.
