Rain Disrupts 'Petrol Langar' in Chandigarh, Leaving Residents Disappointed and Stranded

Rain disrupts Chandigarh's petrol langar event.

A social media announcement about a so-called "petrol langar" in Chandigarh on Tuesday evening drew a large crowd to petrol pumps in Sector 10, with several residents arriving in the hope of receiving free fuel. However, no petrol was ultimately distributed at the spot, leaving many people disappointed after they had travelled to the location, with some braving heavy rainfall to attend the event. The announcement, circulated widely on social media, was attributed to a man identified as Rakesh Trehan. According to the message, petrol was to be distributed at petrol pumps in Sector 10 from 5 pm.

The claim prompted several vehicle owners to make their way to the designated locations, apparently expecting the fuel distribution to take place as advertised. As the message spread online, crowds began gathering at two petrol pumps in the area. The turnout was particularly notable because of the weather conditions, with heavy rain affecting the city at the time. Despite the rainfall, residents arrived with their vehicles and waited at the fuel station, expecting the announced "petrol langar" to begin.

However, the promised distribution did not take place. People at the fuel station were reportedly told that petrol could not be provided because the attendants did not have the necessary permission. The lack of clarity over the announcement left several residents upset, particularly those who had made the journey after seeing the information on social media. A woman identified as Suman said she had travelled to the petrol pump after watching a video about the petrol langar on Instagram. She said the petrol station attendants refused to provide fuel, citing a lack of permission to conduct the distribution.

According to her, only around 10 to 15 people were given tokens, while the larger crowd that had gathered did not receive petrol. The incident highlights how quickly announcements circulated through social media can draw large crowds, particularly when they promise free essential goods such as fuel. In this case, the announcement resulted in residents gathering at the designated locations despite the heavy rain, but the absence of the promised distribution led to frustration among those who had responded to the message.

The circumstances behind the social media announcement, including whether permission had been sought from the petrol pumps or relevant authorities, remained unclear from the information available. The episode left residents questioning the basis of the announcement and why the fuel distribution did not take place after people had already gathered at the locations. The incident also serves as a reminder for residents to verify viral social media announcements before travelling to locations for promised benefits or services. For those who gathered in Sector 10 on Tuesday, the petrol langar announcement ultimately resulted in disappointment, with the expected fuel distribution failing to materialise despite the substantial turnout.
