Putin Issues Fresh Retaliation Warning As Europe Considers Seizing Russian Vessels

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday warned European countries that Moscow would retaliate if Russian ships or other vessels were seized, saying Russia would be “forced to respond in kind” to any further attacks. His comments came amid growing tensions over European efforts to intercept vessels suspected of being part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet”, a network of ships accused of helping Moscow circumvent Western sanctions.

Putin said Russia would not ignore attacks or seizures involving its vessels and indicated that Moscow was prepared to take reciprocal action. He warned that European ships could face seizure if European countries moved ahead with actions against Russian vessels. The remarks represent a further escalation in the confrontation between Russia and European governments over maritime enforcement and sanctions linked to the Ukraine war.

European countries have been increasing efforts to identify and intercept ships suspected of operating as part of Russia’s shadow fleet. The term generally refers to vessels believed to be used to transport Russian oil and other commodities while attempting to avoid restrictions imposed by Western governments. Authorities have raised concerns about the ownership, registration and insurance arrangements surrounding some of these ships, as well as their role in helping Russia maintain energy exports despite sanctions.

The dispute over the shadow fleet is part of a wider effort by European countries to tighten enforcement of sanctions imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. Western governments have sought to limit Moscow’s ability to generate revenue from energy exports, while Russia has developed alternative trading and shipping arrangements to maintain international commerce. Putin’s statement comes as European governments consider further action against vessels suspected of supporting Russia’s sanctions-evasion efforts.
