Punjab Police Seize RPG Launcher in Amritsar, Thwart ISI-Linked Terror Plot
Punjab Police foiled an ISI-backed terror plot, seizing an RPG launcher in Amritsar.
Punjab Police, in coordination with central agencies, dismantled a terror module in Amritsar, arresting two operatives and seizing a Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG-22 Netto anti-tank rocket launcher). The intelligence-driven raid, executed with precision, also recovered the motorcycle used by the suspects, identified as Mehakdeep Singh alias Mehak and Aditya alias Adhi, both residents of Amritsar’s Wadali and Bhaga Chhina villages, respectively. The operation marks a significant blow to cross-border terrorist activities, highlighting Punjab’s robust counter-terrorism efforts.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav revealed that preliminary investigations point to a Pakistan-based ISI operative orchestrating the plot, with the RPG smuggled into India via drone. The suspects were also in contact with Harpreet Singh alias Vicky, a jailed operative in Ferozepur, suggesting a coordinated network. Yadav emphasized that the weapon was intended for a targeted terror attack, underscoring the gravity of the threat. Ongoing investigations aim to uncover forward and backward linkages to dismantle the entire syndicate, with authorities determined to prevent further destabilization in the region.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Amritsar Rural) Maninder Singh detailed the operation, noting that actionable intelligence led to the suspects’ apprehension while they were en route to deliver the consignment. The RPG-22, a sophisticated anti-tank weapon, was intercepted before it could reach its intended recipients. Police are now working to identify the consignment’s recipients, and plans are in place to bring Harpreet alias Vicky before a court for further interrogation. The operation reflects heightened vigilance amid a reported rise in drone-based smuggling attempts along the Punjab border.
