Tragic Dowry Death Shocks Delhi
A 22-year-old woman, Komal alias Varsha, was found dead under suspicious circumstances in Delhi’s Dwarka on August 21, just four months after her marriage, with her family alleging dowry-related harassment led to her death. Komal, two months pregnant, was discovered unconscious at her in-laws’ home in Badu Sarai and declared dead upon arrival at a hospital, police reported. The cause of death remains under investigation, pending a postmortem report.
Komal’s father, Dinesh, filed an FIR on August 23, accusing her husband, Aman, and his family of relentless dowry demands and physical abuse. “She told us Aman and his parents beat her regularly, demanding more money and valuables,” Dinesh stated, alleging they restricted her contact with her family, including blocking mobile phone access. The FIR, lodged at Chhawla police station under Sections 80(2) (dowry death) and 85 (cruelty) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, also notes Komal was found hanging from a ceiling fan, though her family disputes the suicide narrative, suspecting foul play.
Police have recorded statements from neighbors and relatives, with no arrests reported yet. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Ankit Singh said, “We’re examining all angles, and action will follow based on evidence.” The case has drawn attention amid a recent surge in dowry-related violence, including the horrific death of Nikki Bhati in Greater Noida last week, where videos showed her being set ablaze by her husband, Vipin, over dowry demands. Three arrests have been made in that case.

Komal’s death, one of over 6,000 dowry-related deaths reported annually in India per NCRB data, has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of anti-dowry laws. Posts on X, including from @ndtv, reflect public outrage, demanding justice for Komal and systemic change to curb such tragedies.
