Prajwal Revanna’s Desperate Plea: Claims ‘Fast’ Political Rise as Only Mistake in Rape Case
Convicted ex-MP Prajwal Revanna seeks leniency in rape case, blames rapid political rise for charges.
Suspended Janata Dal (Secular) leader and former MP Prajwal Revanna, convicted in a high-profile rape case, emotionally appealed for a reduced sentence in a Bengaluru Special Court on Saturday, claiming his only mistake was his “fast growth in politics.” The 34-year-old, found guilty on Friday by Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat in one of four sexual abuse and rape cases, faces sentencing later today, with prosecutors pushing for life imprisonment.
Breaking down in court, Revanna, a BE Mechanical graduate, insisted he was innocent, alleging that the accusations were orchestrated. “They say I have raped multiple women, but none of the women came out voluntarily to complain,” he told the court, claiming the complainant, a 48-year-old woman who worked at his family’s Gannikada farmhouse in Hassan district, was coerced into filing a complaint six days before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. He argued that the woman, allegedly raped twice in 2021 at the Hassan farmhouse and his Bengaluru residence, with the acts recorded on his mobile phone, did not report the incidents to her family or others until certain videos surfaced.
“I have a family; I have not seen my mother and father for six months,” Revanna pleaded, bowing to the court’s conviction but requesting leniency. Arrested in May 2024 upon returning from Germany, he attributed the charges to political vendettas stemming from his rapid rise in Karnataka’s political landscape. The prosecution, however, presented a strong case, emphasizing the severity of the crimes and the evidence, including the recorded acts, to demand the maximum penalty.

The case has drawn significant attention due to Revanna’s political prominence and the serious nature of the allegations, which involve multiple sexual abuse charges. As the court prepares to deliver the sentence, the outcome is expected to have far-reaching implications for Revanna and the ongoing discourse on accountability for public figures in India.
