Political Row Deepens as Education Minister Criticises Rahul Gandhi's Student Outreach

Minister alleges Rahul Gandhi's remarks are creating fear among students.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his criticism of the government in connection with the NEET paper leak controversy, accusing him of attempting to create anxiety among students and disrupt the examination process. The remarks came two days after the NEET re-examination was conducted following the leak of the original test paper earlier this year.

Speaking to the media, Pradhan alleged that Rahul Gandhi and the Congress were engaging in political opportunism over an issue that directly affects millions of students and their families. While acknowledging the Opposition's right to question the government, the minister said political leaders should exercise responsibility when addressing matters linked to competitive examinations and student welfare.

Pradhan expressed disappointment with Gandhi's conduct during the controversy and referred to a student outreach programme held by the Congress leader in Kota, one of India's largest coaching hubs. According to the minister, the event took place just days before the examination and risked creating uncertainty among aspirants preparing for one of the country's most competitive entrance tests.

The minister further alleged that the Congress hoped the re-examination would encounter difficulties, claiming that the party was attempting to derive political advantage from the controversy. The NEET re-test was conducted after authorities ordered corrective measures in response to the paper leak reported during the original examination held on May 3. The issue had sparked nationwide concern among students, parents and educational institutions.

Pradhan also criticised Rahul Gandhi for raising concerns about student suicides in the context of the examination controversy. While stating that he takes responsibility for issues concerning the education sector, the minister described the use of student deaths for political purposes as inappropriate. He argued that such sensitive matters should be addressed with empathy and caution rather than becoming subjects of political confrontation.

The NEET paper leak case has emerged as a major political flashpoint, with the Opposition demanding accountability and transparency from the government while the Centre has defended its handling of the situation. As investigations and discussions continue, the controversy remains a significant issue in the national debate on examination integrity, student welfare and educational governance.
