Police Launch Probe After Class 12 Student Shot Dead in Samastipur

A Class 12 student was shot dead while on her way to school in Bihar's Samastipur district on Monday, triggering protests by family members and local residents. Police have launched an investigation into the incident and recovered four bullet shells from the crime scene as they search for the accused.
According to police, the victim, identified as Sonam Kumari, was the daughter of Umesh Thakur and a student at Kasturba Vidyalaya on Pusa Road. She was walking to school through Kaijiya village when she was allegedly attacked by motorcycle-borne assailants, who opened fire before fleeing the spot. The seriously injured student was rushed for medical assistance but succumbed to her injuries.
The incident led to widespread anger among villagers, who gathered at the scene and staged a protest demanding immediate action against those responsible. Police personnel were deployed to control the situation and begin collecting evidence. Investigators examined the crime scene and recovered four spent bullet shells, which have been sent for forensic analysis.

The victim's family has alleged that a young man from the same village was behind the killing. According to Sonam's mother, Sangeeta Devi, the accused had been in contact with her daughter and had allegedly asked her to marry him a day before the incident. The family has claimed that the proposal was followed by the fatal shooting the next morning.
Senior police officials, including Superintendent of Police Arvind Pratap Singh, Sadar SDPO-1 and Additional Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Pandey, visited the hospital and reviewed the progress of the investigation. They also interacted with officers handling the case and assured the family that every effort was being made to identify and apprehend the accused.
Police said multiple teams have been formed to trace those involved and that raids are being conducted based on available leads. Officials stated that the accused would be arrested soon and that further action would be taken in accordance with the findings of the investigation. The motive behind the crime is being examined as investigators continue to gather evidence and record witness statements.
