Police Investigate Assault on Muslim Man Accused of 'Love Jihad' at Bhopal Hotel

Muslim man brutally assaulted by Hindu group over 'Love Jihad' allegations; woman confirms consensual five-year relationship.

A 27-year-old Muslim man was allegedly assaulted and publicly humiliated by members of a Hindu organisation inside a hotel in Bhopal after being accused of “Love Jihad” over his relationship with a Hindu woman. The incident took place on Sunday evening and has sparked fresh debate over mob vigilantism, interfaith relationships, and the handling of such cases by authorities. According to reports, the man was beaten, partially stripped, and had ink and cow dung smeared on his face before being taken to a police station by the group involved in the confrontation.

Police identified the man as Arif Khan, a resident of Jahangirabad in Bhopal. Authorities said members of the organisation allegedly entered the hotel after receiving information that a Hindu woman and a Muslim man were staying together. The group reportedly forced its way into the couple’s room and accused Khan of involvement in so-called “Love Jihad,” a term often used by right-wing groups to allege religious conversion through relationships or marriage. Witness accounts indicated that the situation quickly escalated into physical assault and public humiliation inside the hotel premises.

According to police officials, the woman involved in the case later informed authorities that she had willingly come to meet Khan and had been in a consensual live-in relationship with him for nearly five years. She reportedly told officers that there had been no coercion, forced religious conversion, or sexual misconduct. The woman explained that restrictions at her residence prevented the couple from meeting privately, which led them to use the hotel room. She also declined to file any complaint against Khan and reportedly maintained her position during questioning at the police station.

Despite the seriousness of the allegations regarding assault and humiliation, no criminal case was immediately registered because none of the involved parties submitted a formal complaint. Police officials stated that all those present were counselled and later released after being warned to maintain communal harmony and avoid actions that could disturb public order. Govindpura police station in-charge Awadhesh Singh Tomar confirmed that authorities had spoken to both sides and assessed the circumstances surrounding the incident before allowing them to leave.

During the investigation, police also revealed that Arif Khan has a criminal record involving multiple cases registered at different police stations in Bhopal. Officials stated that the cases include allegations of fraud, theft, and criminal breach of trust, along with several matters currently pending before courts. Police confirmed that Khan had recently been released on bail before the latest incident occurred. However, authorities clarified that the previous criminal cases were unrelated to the allegations and violence that unfolded at the hotel.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the broader controversy surrounding the implementation of the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act and allegations commonly described as “Love Jihad” cases in Madhya Pradesh. Government data presented in the state Assembly earlier showed that 283 cases had been registered under the law between January 2020 and July 2025. While many investigations remain pending, a relatively small number have resulted in convictions, with acquittals reported in several completed cases. The latest episode is likely to intensify discussions about communal tensions, vigilantism, and the legal process surrounding interfaith relationships in the state.
