Police Arrest Former Firhad Hakim Aide Over Taratala Warehouse Collapse

Former OSD to ex-Kolkata Mayor arrested in warehouse collapse investigation.

The arrest of Kalicharan Bandyopadhyay, a former Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to ex-Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, has intensified political tensions in West Bengal following the deadly Taratala warehouse collapse that claimed 15 lives. Bandyopadhyay, popularly known as Kali, was arrested by the Kolkata Police on the orders of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) just hours after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari linked the tragedy to alleged systemic corruption within the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) during a speech in the state Assembly.

In his address, the Chief Minister alleged that corruption in the civic administration contributed to the circumstances surrounding the warehouse collapse. He specifically referred to Bandyopadhyay while accusing officials of irregularities connected to the case. The arrest followed soon after, drawing significant political attention as investigators continue to examine the causes of the collapse and possible lapses in approvals and oversight.

The development has also sparked discussion within the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), particularly among leaders associated with the party's rebel faction. Political observers believe the arrest sends a strong message that individuals linked to the faction may face scrutiny if evidence emerges during ongoing investigations. According to reports, the move has received backing from the camp led by the party's top leadership, further fuelling speculation about shifting political dynamics within the TMC.

Firhad Hakim, a senior TMC leader and former minister, had long been regarded as a close associate of the party leadership before his recent alignment with the rebel camp. His former aide's arrest has therefore attracted attention beyond the warehouse collapse investigation, with many viewing it through the lens of the state's evolving political landscape. However, no findings of guilt have been established, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The Taratala warehouse collapse has already prompted demands for greater accountability over construction safety and municipal oversight. Rescue operations concluded after several days, with the death toll reaching 15. As the SIT continues its probe, investigators are expected to examine whether negligence, regulatory violations or corruption played any role in the incident. Any criminal liability will ultimately be determined through the judicial process.
