Police Arrest Bengal Man for ₹2 Crore Matchmaking Scam, Allegedly Involving 500 Women

Bengal man allegedly cheated 500 women in scam.

Delhi Police have arrested a 35-year-old man from West Bengal for allegedly defrauding more than 500 women across India of nearly Rs 2 crore through a sophisticated online romance and matrimonial scam. The accused, identified as Anand Kumar, was apprehended in North 24 Parganas district following a complaint from one victim who lost around Rs 7 lakh. Police recovered four mobile phones, eight SIM cards, three debit cards, and gold jewellery purchased with the proceeds during raids.

Kumar is accused of creating multiple fake profiles on popular dating and matrimonial apps, posing as a doctor, businessman, lawyer, film producer, or other high-profile professionals. He reportedly built emotional relationships with victims over extended periods, gaining their trust through prolonged conversations. He then lured them with promises of marriage, lucrative professional opportunities, or fabricated urgent needs such as medical emergencies and business losses, before extracting money through various pretexts.

Investigators from the South-West District Cyber Police said the racket involved elements of romance scams, honey-trapping, and extortion. Kumar allegedly operated the scheme for a significant period, targeting women from different parts of the country. The case came to light when technical surveillance and digital tracking led investigators to his location in West Bengal, where he was nabbed after coordinated efforts.

The arrest highlights the growing menace of cyber frauds on dating and matrimonial platforms, where perpetrators exploit emotional vulnerabilities for financial gain. Police have urged users to exercise caution, verify identities thoroughly, and avoid sharing financial details or sending money to online acquaintances. Similar cases in recent years have exposed how fake profiles and emotional manipulation can lead to substantial losses.

Delhi Police have appealed to other potential victims to come forward and register complaints. The probe is ongoing to determine if Kumar worked alone or as part of a larger network. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with online relationships and the importance of digital safety in an era of widespread app-based interactions.

Authorities continue to monitor such cyber crimes, with warnings issued periodically about the need for vigilance on matrimonial and dating websites. Kumar is currently in police custody as investigations proceed into the full extent of the fraud.
