Police Arrest 8 After Tinder Date Leads To Andheri Cafe Scam Bust

Tinder date sting exposes Andheri cafe scam, 8 arrested.

A planned sting operation by a group of vigilant friends led to the bust of an alleged online dating scam at a popular café in Andheri, Mumbai, police confirmed on Monday. Eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, which involved defrauding unsuspecting victims met through the dating app Tinder.

According to the Mumbai Police Cybercrime Unit, the victims were lured into meeting the suspects at the café under the pretense of a date. Once there, the suspects allegedly coerced and manipulated them into fraudulent transactions, including unauthorized card payments and online transfers. Authorities noted that the scam had been ongoing for several months, with multiple complaints filed against the group.

The operation began after a group of friends, who had themselves encountered suspicious activity on the app, decided to set up a controlled meeting to gather evidence. Their alertness allowed police to track the suspects and coordinate the arrest swiftly, preventing further victims from falling prey to the scam.

Police recovered electronic devices, bank cards, and transaction records during the raid, which are now being examined to identify the full scope of the fraud. “The initiative and courage shown by these citizens were instrumental in bringing the perpetrators to justice,” said a senior officer from the Cybercrime Unit.

The arrested individuals face multiple charges, including cheating, fraud, and criminal conspiracy under Indian law. Investigations are ongoing to determine if they were part of a larger network operating across other parts of the city or country.

Authorities have advised dating app users to exercise caution and report suspicious behavior immediately. They emphasized that personal safety and vigilance remain key in preventing such scams, and public cooperation can significantly aid in curbing cybercrime incidents.
