PM Modi Lauds Lovlina Borgohain For Objecting to Distorted India Map

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday praised boxer Lovlina Borgohain for objecting to an incorrectly depicted map of India displayed by a restaurant in Glasgow, Scotland. PM Modi made the remarks while meeting Indian medal winners following their return from the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The issue emerged when Borgohain visited the Glasgow restaurant with members of the Indian boxing contingent for a celebratory dinner. The gathering followed India’s strong boxing performance at the Commonwealth Games, where the contingent secured 10 medals. Borgohain, who is from Assam, won a silver medal at the event.

While looking at the restaurant’s menu, Borgohain noticed that the map of India used in its branding did not include the northeastern region. Another version of the map displayed outside the establishment reportedly contained the same error. The boxer raised the issue directly and politely with the restaurant’s management.

Borgohain said she felt hurt by the omission because she belongs to the Northeast and asked the establishment to ensure that the correct map was used in the future. Her intervention drew attention after details of the exchange circulated on social media, prompting wider criticism of the restaurant’s inaccurate depiction.

The restaurant, Mister Singh’s India, later issued an unequivocal apology and said it would replace the logo with one featuring the correct map. In its statement, the establishment also said it had been an honour to host the Indian contingent following the athletes’ performances at the Commonwealth Games.

The matter also drew the attention of the Indian mission in Glasgow, which reportedly took it up with the restaurant. PM Modi’s appreciation of Borgohain highlighted her decision to address the issue while representing India abroad, adding recognition beyond her silver-medal-winning performance at the Games.
