PM Modi arrives in Bhutan for historic royal celebration.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced his two-day official visit to Bhutan on November 11, 2025, arriving in the Himalayan kingdom to participate in the 70th birthday celebrations of the fourth king, His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck. The visit includes high-level engagements with the current monarch, His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck, the fourth king himself, and Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, aimed at reinforcing the longstanding strategic and cultural partnership between the two nations.

In his pre-departure statement, Mr. Modi expressed strong confidence that the trip would further solidify the deep bonds of friendship and accelerate joint initiatives for mutual progress and prosperity. He described it as a personal honor to join Bhutan in marking this significant milestone and pointed to the ongoing display of sacred Piprahwa Relics of Lord Buddha from India during the Global Peace Prayer Festival as a powerful testament to the profound civilisational and spiritual connections shared by the two countries.

A major highlight of the visit is the inauguration of the 1,020-megawatt Punatsangchhu-II hydropower project, a landmark achievement in bilateral energy collaboration. Developed with Indian technical and financial support, the project will enhance Bhutan’s renewable energy capacity, support power exports to India, and contribute significantly to economic growth and sustainability in the region.
