Parliament Opens 2026 Budget Session with Presidential Address

President Murmu addresses joint sitting as Budget presentation nears on February 1 Sunday.

The much-anticipated Budget Session of Parliament commenced today in New Delhi with President Droupadi Murmu delivering her customary address to the joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. This ceremonial opening sets the tone for one of the year’s most critical parliamentary events, where lawmakers will debate and shape the Union Budget for the financial year 2026-27. The session, spanning two phases with a total of 30 sittings, runs from January 28 to April 2, 2026, allowing time for initial discussions, committee reviews during the recess, and final passage of key financial legislation.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had earlier confirmed the schedule on X, noting the President’s approval for the summoning of both Houses. The first phase concludes on February 13, followed by a break before Parliament reconvenes on March 9. This structured timeline aims to facilitate thorough, meaningful debate on governance priorities and people-centric policies, as emphasized by the government.

Reports indicate Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to present the Union Budget on February 1—a Sunday—marking a rare departure from tradition that will necessitate special logistical arrangements in Parliament. A day earlier, on January 29, the Economic Survey 2025-26 is expected to be tabled, offering a detailed assessment of the economy’s performance, growth drivers, and emerging challenges.

The session arrives at a pivotal moment for India’s economic trajectory. With focus areas including accelerated infrastructure development, job creation, fiscal discipline, and sustainable growth, MPs across party lines will scrutinize taxation policies, public spending plans, and reform measures. Discussions are likely to cover ways to boost private investment, strengthen manufacturing, and address global uncertainties impacting trade and supply chains.

As the government pushes for transparent and effective legislative processes, this Budget Session promises intense deliberations that could shape India’s fiscal roadmap for the coming year. The two-phase format provides breathing room for standing committees to examine proposals in depth, ensuring robust oversight before final approval of appropriation and finance bills.
