Pakistan Minister Claims Open War With Afghanistan, Highlights Risk to India
Pakistan’s Defence Minister warns of open conflict with Afghanistan, highlighting potential security risks for India.
Pakistan’s Defence Minister has escalated tensions in the region by declaring that the country is in an “open war” with Afghanistan, further complicating relations with neighbouring India. The statement comes amid rising cross-border incidents and a backdrop of longstanding disputes over security and territorial concerns.
Addressing the media, the Defence Minister accused Afghan authorities of supporting anti-Pakistan elements along the border, alleging that insurgent groups have been allowed to operate freely within Afghan territory. He warned that Pakistan would continue military operations until these perceived threats are neutralised.
The remarks have sparked concern in India, which shares a border with both nations and has historically been caught in the crossfire of Pakistan-Afghanistan tensions. Analysts suggest that Pakistan’s statements could indirectly strain India-Pakistan relations, especially given the ongoing security challenges in Jammu and Kashmir and along the western frontier.

Experts note that Pakistan’s rhetoric comes at a time when diplomatic channels between Kabul and Islamabad have largely stalled. Past peace initiatives and confidence-building measures have repeatedly faltered, and both countries accuse each other of failing to prevent militant activity.
The international community has expressed concern over the potential for escalation, urging both Pakistan and Afghanistan to engage in dialogue to avoid a wider conflict. The UN and regional powers have highlighted the need for coordinated action against terrorism without destabilising civilian populations.
While Pakistan maintains that its operations are defensive, observers warn that the situation could destabilise South Asian security dynamics if military actions intensify. The coming weeks are expected to be critical in determining whether diplomatic engagement or military escalation will shape the region’s future.
