Outrage Over AIADMK MP's Sexist 'Nayanthara' Jibe at Rally

AIADMK MP's 'I want Nayanthara' dig at Stalin triggers political row

A fresh political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after senior AIADMK leader and Rajya Sabha MP C Ve Shanmugam made derogatory remarks referencing popular actress Nayanthara during a party protest, drawing widespread condemnation from political rivals, the film industry, and social media users. The incident occurred on March 17, 2026, in Villupuram district, approximately 150 km from Chennai, where AIADMK organized statewide demonstrations against the ruling DMK government.

Shanmugam, a former state minister, was criticizing Chief Minister MK Stalin's public outreach initiative "Tell us your dream" (Unga Kanavai Sollunga), which invites citizens to share aspirations with assurances of fulfillment. Mocking the scheme, Shanmugam reportedly said, "I want Nayanthara, will you fulfil? Will the Chief Minister fulfil someone's dream to marry Nayanthara?" The comment, made in the context of a rally addressing issues like women's safety and law and order, was seen as objectifying the actress and sparked immediate backlash for its misogynistic tone.

The remarks quickly escalated into a major row, with the ruling DMK leaders condemning them as "disgusting," lacking political ethics, and reflective of a "cheap mindset." DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan and MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian demanded a public apology from Shanmugam, while urging AIADMK coordinator Edappadi K Palaniswami to take disciplinary action. The controversy was amplified by the timing, as Tamil Nadu heads toward assembly elections on April 23, 2026, heightening political sensitivities around gender respect and public discourse.

The South Indian Film Artistes Association (SIAA) issued a strongly worded letter to Shanmugam, describing the comments as "extremely derogatory and shameful" and a breach of parliamentary decorum. The body demanded an unconditional apology and assurance against future disrespectful remarks toward women in the film industry. Nayanthara, a prominent South Indian actress known for her roles in Tamil and Telugu cinema and married to filmmaker Vignesh Shivan with twin children, was dragged into the political spat without any direct involvement.

Later on the same day, Shanmugam expressed regret, clarifying that the reference to Nayanthara was a "mistake" with no malicious intent. Despite the clarification, the episode has fueled broader criticism of AIADMK's approach to women's issues, especially given the protest's focus on crimes against women under the current regime. The incident underscores ongoing tensions between the DMK and AIADMK ahead of the polls, with gender-sensitive rhetoric emerging as a flashpoint in Tamil Nadu's charged political landscape.
