Odisha Railway Policeman Dies After Mob Assault Linked To Sexual Abuse Allegations

Suspended railway cop killed after assault allegations in Odisha

A suspended railway police personnel was beaten to death and another man critically injured after a mob allegedly attacked them over accusations of sexually assaulting two women on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar on Thursday. The incident has triggered widespread attention after a purported video of the assault surfaced on social media.

According to police officials, the violence erupted after two women raised an alarm accusing the men of sexual misconduct. Local residents quickly gathered at the spot, and the situation escalated into mob violence before law enforcement personnel could intervene. Both the accused individuals were rescued by police and shifted to a hospital, where one of them later succumbed to injuries.

A video purportedly showing the assaulted man being transported to hospital with his hands tied has since gone viral online, intensifying public reaction to the incident. However, authorities and media reports noted that the authenticity of the clip has not been independently verified.

Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police Jagmohan Meena said preliminary findings indicated that the deceased, identified as suspended railway cop Swain, appeared to be behaving abnormally at the time of the incident. The officer stated that the accused seemed disoriented and allegedly attempted to bite police personnel while they were trying to rescue him from the crowd.

Police have launched parallel investigations into both the alleged assault on the women and the subsequent mob attack. Officials confirmed that two separate FIRs have been registered — one related to murder and another concerning attempted rape allegations.

The incident has once again drawn attention to rising instances of mob justice and the challenges faced by law enforcement in preventing crowd violence during emotionally charged situations. Authorities are currently examining video footage, eyewitness accounts, and forensic evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.
