In a chilling incident that has shocked Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district, a 21-year-old college student, Surjyakant Sethy, allegedly bludgeoned his parents and sister to death in the early hours of March 4, 2025. The gruesome murders took place around 3 AM in Jayabada Sethi Sahi village, under Jagatsinghpur Sadar police station limits, as the family slept. Using blunt objects—reportedly stones or a wooden club—Surjyakant killed his father, Prasant Sethy (65), mother, Kanaklata Sethy (62), and sister, Rosalin Sethy (25), leaving the community reeling.
Police investigations point to a grim motive: Surjyakant’s frustration over his family’s opposition to his addiction to online gaming. Jagatsinghpur Police Station Inspector-in-Charge Prabhas Sahu revealed that the unemployed youth, who had completed his studies, clashed frequently with his parents and sister over his excessive mobile gaming habits. His father, a laborer, supported the family, while Surjyakant stayed home, engrossed in virtual worlds. Superintendent of Police Bhawani Sankar Udgata noted that the accused hid near the village after the act but was swiftly arrested.
Neighbors and relatives described a troubled household, with Surjyakant’s elder brother, Ramakanta, mentioning his erratic behavior in the days leading up to the tragedy. Authorities suspect mental instability may have played a role, though no formal diagnosis has been confirmed. Local MLA Amarendra Das recalled a prior family visit over a land dispute, hinting at deeper tensions.
The bodies, discovered in pools of blood, were sent for post-mortem examinations as a police and scientific team launched a detailed probe.
