No One Can Escape! Tamil Nadu CM Vows Justice in Retired Policeman’s Murder Case

Tamil Nadu CM Vows Justice in Retired Policeman’s Murder Case

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin assured the state Assembly on Tuesday that the perpetrators behind the murder of retired police sub-inspector Zakhir Hussein would face justice.

Responding to a call attention motion raised by multiple legislators regarding the brutal killing on March 18 in Tirunelveli, Stalin emphasized the government’s firm stance against vigilantism. “No one can escape the law’s grasp,” he declared, noting that this principle applies universally, not just to this case.

Stalin revealed that two suspects have surrendered in a Tirunelveli court, while special police teams are pursuing others involved.

He underscored the case’s priority by allowing even unlisted MLAs to join the discussion, reflecting the government’s commitment to addressing the issue transparently. Preliminary investigations point to a land dispute between Hussein, a mutawalli, and Krishnamurthy alias Mohammed Thoufeeq, with complaints and counter-complaints filed by Hussein and Thoufeeq’s brother-in-law, Akbar Basha. A Community Service Register entry was made, and a probe was underway when the murder occurred.

Leader of Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami condemned the police’s inaction, alleging negligence enabled the crime. He cited a complaint Hussein lodged three months ago about threats to his life, including a video circulating on social media where the ex-policeman accused a 20-30 member group of targeting him and claimed police officials, including an assistant commissioner and inspector, sided with his adversaries.

Palaniswami criticized the police for holding a “kangaroo court” instead of acting decisively, linking their failure to the murder during Ramzan, which has sparked tension in Tirunelveli. He demanded action against errant officers and swift justice for Hussein.

Stalin acknowledged Hussein’s January 8 video and said an inquiry into its claims is ongoing. Members from various parties echoed calls for prompt action, amplifying the urgency of resolving this shocking crime.
