Nitin Gadkari Says Mumbai-Goa Highway To Be Ready Soon
Gadkari promises Mumbai-Goa highway completion within two months
The long-delayed Mumbai-Goa Highway project is set to be completed within the next two months, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said, raising hopes for faster and safer connectivity between Maharashtra’s capital and the Konkan region.Providing an update on the progress, Gadkari stated that the remaining construction work is in its final stages and that authorities are working on a war footing to meet the revised deadline. The highway, which forms part of National Highway 66 (NH-66), has witnessed repeated delays over the years due to a range of issues, including land acquisition disputes, environmental approvals, and technical challenges in executing work across difficult terrain.
The Mumbai-Goa Highway is considered a crucial arterial route, linking Mumbai with several key towns and tourist destinations along the scenic Konkan coast, such as Alibaug, Ratnagiri, and Goa. The stretch is heavily used by both passenger and freight traffic and becomes particularly congested during weekends and holiday seasons when tourists travel to coastal destinations.
Once completed, the upgraded highway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Mumbai and Goa, which currently can stretch beyond 12 hours during peak periods. The project involves converting the existing road into a four-lane highway, along with strengthening road surfaces, improving drainage systems, and introducing better safety measures, including signage and crash barriers.

Officials have acknowledged that certain patches of the highway have been in poor condition for years, causing inconvenience and safety concerns for commuters. Accidents, traffic bottlenecks, and delays have been frequent complaints, prompting calls for faster execution of the project. Gadkari emphasized that resolving such issues has been a top priority and assured that all major obstacles have now been addressed.
The completion of the highway is also expected to provide a significant boost to economic activity in the Konkan region. Improved connectivity will facilitate smoother movement of goods, benefit local businesses, and support tourism, which is a major contributor to the local economy. Better road infrastructure is also likely to attract more investment into the region.
The announcement comes amid the central government’s broader focus on infrastructure development, with a strong emphasis on expanding and modernizing national highways across the country. If completed within the stated timeline, the Mumbai-Goa Highway project would mark a major milestone in improving connectivity along India’s western coastline and addressing long-standing commuter concerns.
