Nilgiris, Coimbatore Brace For Three Days Of Heavy Rain And Strong Winds

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Tamil Nadu has forecast heavy rainfall in the hilly areas of the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts over the next three days, with strong winds also expected in the region. The weather system is likely to intensify rain activity across parts of the state, particularly along the Western Ghats. The forecast is valid from Monday to Wednesday.

The changing weather conditions have been attributed to a trough extending from southwest Madhya Pradesh to the Gulf of Mannar. Under its influence, isolated places in the hill regions of the Nilgiris and Coimbatore could receive heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds. The combination of rain and strong winds is expected to be more significant in exposed and elevated areas.

Moderate rain accompanied by strong surface winds is also likely at isolated places in other Western Ghats districts on Monday and Tuesday. The districts mentioned in the forecast include Tirupattur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Tiruchy, Ariyalur, Perambalur and Kallakurichi.

The weather conditions could provide temporary relief from the prevailing heat in some areas, although strong winds may create difficulties for road travel and affect weak structures, trees and standing crops in exposed locations. Residents, tourists and motorists travelling through vulnerable mountain stretches have been advised to remain cautious, particularly as rainfall could reduce visibility and make roads slippery.

Chennai is expected to remain generally cloudy, with light rain possible in parts of the city during the evening or night. No widespread heavy rainfall has been forecast for the state capital at present. Meanwhile, daytime temperatures are likely to remain high in parts of interior Tamil Nadu, with the maximum temperature potentially rising by up to four degrees Celsius above normal at isolated places.

Authorities are expected to monitor conditions in the Nilgiris and Coimbatore hills, where intense spells of rainfall can occasionally cause waterlogging, minor landslips and disruptions along mountain roads. People living in hilly and low-lying areas have been advised to follow weather updates, particularly if heavy rain continues for prolonged periods, while the public has also been urged to take necessary precautions during travel and avoid prolonged exposure to the afternoon heat.
