NIA Raids Birbhum In West Bengal, Seizes Explosives; One Held
NIA recovers explosives from Birbhum raid, arrests one person.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday recovered a large quantity of explosives during a search operation in the Nalhati area of West Bengal’s Birbhum district and arrested one suspect in connection with the case. The raid, conducted on the basis of specific intelligence inputs, led to the seizure of 20 bags of ammonium nitrate and multiple detonators, creating concern among residents in the area.
According to officials, an NIA team carried out the operation with assistance from local police after receiving information about the alleged stockpiling of explosive materials. During the search, investigators found the suspected explosive substances and detained an individual whose responses during preliminary questioning were reportedly inconsistent. The identity of the arrested person has not been disclosed as the investigation remains ongoing.
The arrested suspect is being questioned by investigators to determine the source of the explosive materials, the people involved in storing them and the intended purpose behind keeping such a large quantity in the area. The NIA is examining whether the materials were collected for legitimate commercial activities or whether they were linked to any possible criminal or sabotage-related plan.

Officials said the recovered ammonium nitrate and detonators may be sent for forensic examination as part of the investigation. Ammonium nitrate is commonly used in fertilisers, mining and construction activities, but its storage along with detonators has raised concerns among investigators. Authorities are now working to establish whether the seized material was connected to any planned unlawful activity.
Security has been increased in Nalhati and nearby areas following the recovery. The NIA has so far not released additional details, citing the sensitivity of the investigation. Officials are also reportedly searching for other individuals who may have links to the case after information obtained during questioning of the arrested suspect.
The arrested person is expected to be produced before the special NIA court, where investigators are likely to seek further custody for continued questioning. Authorities are focusing on tracing the origin of the explosive materials and identifying any wider network involved in the case. Investigators believe that further details could emerge as the probe progresses.
