NCP (SP) Leader Vikas Lawande Arrested Days After Black Ink Attack Over Warkari Sect Remarks
NCP (SP) leader Vikas Lawande arrested after remarks alleging infiltration into the Warkari sect, days after a black ink attack.
Vikas Lawande was arrested by Pune Police on Thursday, days after a spiritual leader allegedly threw black ink at him over controversial remarks concerning the Warkari sect. The arrest follows growing tensions surrounding statements allegedly made by the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) spokesperson regarding “infiltration” into the Warkari community, a revered devotional movement in Maharashtra. The incident has sparked political and religious controversy across the state, drawing sharp reactions from various groups associated with the Warkari tradition.
According to police officials, Lawande was arrested after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the court. Deputy Commissioner of Police Somay Munde confirmed that the NCP (SP) leader has been booked under Sections 196 and 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Section 196 pertains to promoting enmity between groups and disturbing communal harmony, while Section 299 deals with deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious sentiments. Police said Lawande would be produced before the court on Friday for further proceedings.
The controversy intensified earlier this month after spiritual leader Sangram Bhandare and his associates allegedly confronted Lawande at Mhatobachi Alandi in Pune district. During the confrontation, Bhandare reportedly threw black ink on the politician in protest against his remarks about the Warkari sect. Videos of the incident circulated widely on social media, showing Lawande covered in black ink while supporters of the spiritual leader raised slogans condemning his comments. The visuals quickly drew public attention and escalated the dispute into a major political issue.

Sources familiar with the investigation said the court took note of multiple cases allegedly pending against Lawande during the anticipatory bail hearing. According to reports, investigators argued that all relevant details regarding those cases had not been fully disclosed before the court. However, Lawande’s supporters have claimed that the action against him is politically motivated and intended to silence opposition voices. Leaders from the NCP (SP) are expected to raise the issue politically in the coming days, particularly ahead of upcoming political events in Maharashtra.
The Warkari sect holds deep cultural and spiritual importance in Maharashtra and is known for its centuries-old devotional traditions centered around Lord Vitthal of Pandharpur. Any remarks perceived as offensive or divisive toward the community often trigger strong public reactions due to the sect’s emotional and religious significance among devotees. Political leaders across party lines have historically exercised caution while addressing issues related to the Warkari movement, given its widespread influence and large following throughout the state.
The latest developments have once again highlighted the growing intersection of religion and politics in Maharashtra’s public discourse. While the police investigation continues, both the black ink attack and Lawande’s arrest have intensified debate over freedom of speech, religious sensitivity, and political accountability. Authorities have appealed for calm and urged citizens not to spread inflammatory content online as tensions surrounding the matter continue to remain high across sections of the state’s political and religious communities.
