Navi Mumbai Mayor Demands Answers After Live Wire Shocks Students

Two Navi Mumbai students hospitalised after live wire electric shock

Two school students suffered an electric shock after stepping on an exposed live wire while returning home from school in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday. The incident occurred after a short circuit reportedly caused electricity to spread through an exposed wire lying on the road beneath a bridge. The two teenagers were rushed to hospital soon after the accident, where doctors provided emergency treatment. Officials later confirmed that both girls are conscious, stable and currently out of danger, although they continue to remain under medical observation as a precaution.

The injured students have been identified as 15-year-old Shubhangi Nalawade and Ujwala Wagh. According to officials, the girls were walking home when they unknowingly came into contact with the live wire. The electric current is believed to have spread after the short circuit, creating a dangerous situation for pedestrians using the road. Passersby and local residents quickly responded to the incident and ensured the students received immediate medical attention before they were transported to a nearby hospital.

The students were first admitted to DY Patil Hospital, where they received initial treatment from doctors. After their condition was assessed, they were shifted to Fortis Hospital in Vashi for further medical care and observation. Hospital authorities said both girls responded well to treatment and are in stable condition. Doctors are continuing to monitor their health to ensure there are no delayed complications resulting from the electric shock.

Reacting to the incident, Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil described it as unfortunate and said the authorities have begun an investigation into the matter. She stated that officials are trying to determine which agency is responsible for the exposed electricity line. According to the mayor, the inquiry will establish whether the wire belongs to the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) or another organisation responsible for maintaining the electrical infrastructure in the area.

The investigation will also examine how the short circuit occurred and why the live wire remained exposed on a public road. Civic authorities are expected to inspect the location thoroughly and take necessary measures to prevent similar incidents. If negligence is found during the inquiry, appropriate action may be taken against the agency or officials responsible for maintaining the electrical line.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over electrical safety during the monsoon season, when heavy rainfall and waterlogging can increase the risk of exposed wires and electrical hazards. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious while walking through flooded streets or areas where damaged electrical infrastructure may be present. Officials have also assured the public that steps will be taken to improve safety measures and reduce the risk of similar accidents in the future.
