Nagpur Parents Booked After Chaining 12-Year-Old Son For Stealing Phones
Nagpur parents chained their 12-year-old son daily for misbehavior; the child was rescued, and the parents were booked under law.
A shocking case of child abuse has come to light in Nagpur, where a 12-year-old school dropout boy was repeatedly chained and padlocked at home by his parents to curb his alleged "misbehavior." The parents, both daily wage laborers, would tie the minor’s arms and legs with iron chains every day before leaving for work, a practice they continued for the last two months. The boy was found in a terrified state inside the locked house in the South Nagpur area, with visible injuries on his hands and legs caused by the restraints.
The incident was exposed after local residents alerted the authorities through the Child Helpline (1098) after previous police complaints went unaddressed. A raid by the District Women and Child Development Office team discovered the child locked up alone, prompting immediate rescue. The boy was shifted to a safe location, provided medical care, and placed under the care of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), where he is currently undergoing counselling. The parents justified their actions by claiming the child had become extremely mischievous, frequently ran away from home, and stole mobile phones from others.
A case has been registered against the parents under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, for subjecting the minor to physical and mental torture. The authorities have emphasized that the act constitutes a serious violation of child rights. Preliminary assessments indicate the child endured prolonged physical restraint and emotional distress, highlighting the need for urgent intervention and rehabilitation.

The case has raised serious concerns about child protection mechanisms in the area, especially after reports that the police had received complaints twice earlier but failed to act. Local residents and child rights activists have criticized the delay, stressing that a timely response could have prevented further trauma to the child. The incident underscores the importance of community vigilance and the role of helplines in safeguarding vulnerable children from neglect and abuse.
The Child Protection Unit has appealed to citizens to immediately report any instances of harassment, violence, or neglect involving children to the authorities or the Child Helpline (1098). The boy’s rescue marks a critical step in addressing his safety and well-being, with ongoing efforts focused on his rehabilitation and ensuring such incidents are not repeated. The case serves as a grim reminder of the challenges in protecting children in underprivileged households and the need for stronger enforcement of child rights laws.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on providing the child with a secure environment and addressing the root causes of his behavior. Authorities have assured that the family will face legal consequences, while the minor receives necessary support to recover from the traumatic experience. The incident has sparked wider discussions on child welfare, parental responsibility, and the role of society in preventing abuse in vulnerable communities.
