Myanmar Angle Under Scanner After American Carrying Chinese Passport Arrested In Uttar Pradesh
Authorities investigate Myanmar link in passport-related detention case.
Central intelligence agencies are questioning an American national arrested near the India-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh as they investigate how he came into possession of a Chinese passport and whether he has any links to a separate case involving foreign nationals accused of training armed groups in Myanmar. The inquiry follows the detention of the man by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) in Maharajganj district earlier this month.
The accused, identified as Jordan Brown, 36, a resident of California, was arrested on July 11 near border pillar 516 in the Mainihwa area, close to the Sonauli border crossing with Nepal. According to officials, Brown was intercepted by SSB personnel during a routine document verification exercise. Authorities alleged that he attempted to flee when asked to produce his travel documents but was chased and apprehended with the assistance of local villagers. Officials said the incident was captured on video.
During the search, security personnel recovered a Chinese passport along with ₹31,460 in cash, Nepalese currency, two mobile phones, religious texts, an artificial intelligence-based translation device, a diary and a wristwatch. Investigators are now examining how the American citizen obtained a Chinese passport and whether it was acquired through legal or fraudulent means. Officials are also analysing the electronic devices and other items seized during the operation for potential evidence related to his travel history and contacts.

Central intelligence agencies are simultaneously probing whether Brown has any connection to an ongoing investigation involving foreign nationals allegedly linked to armed groups operating in Myanmar. Investigators are exploring the possibility that Brown may have obtained the Chinese passport while in Myanmar or through networks operating in the region. However, officials have not established any direct link between Brown and the Myanmar case, and the investigation remains at a preliminary stage.
The Myanmar-linked case under scrutiny involves another American national, identified as VanDyke, and six Ukrainian nationals who were previously arrested on allegations of providing training to representatives of the Kuki-Chin Army in Myanmar. Authorities are examining whether Brown had any contact with the accused in that case or was associated with similar activities. Officials are also reviewing his travel records, communication history and movements across international borders to determine whether he had visited Myanmar or maintained links with individuals under investigation.
Security agencies have not disclosed the purpose of Brown's presence near the India-Nepal border or the validity of the Chinese passport recovered from him. Officials said multiple agencies are coordinating the investigation, given the cross-border and international dimensions of the case. While Brown remains in custody, investigators are expected to continue questioning him and conducting forensic analysis of the seized devices and documents. Authorities have not announced any additional charges, and further action will depend on the outcome of the ongoing inquiry into his identity, travel documents and possible international connections.
