Mumbai Teen Accuses Mother and Uncle of Forcing Her Into Prostitution; Police Launch Investigation

Mumbai teen accuses mother and neighbor of forcing her into prostitution.

A disturbing case has come to light in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area, where a 10th-grade minor girl has lodged a police complaint alleging that her mother and a male neighbor forced her into prostitution as a means of earning money. The teenager first confided in her school teacher before the matter was reported to local authorities.

According to the victim’s statement, the abuse began in April and continued until she sought help. She described how both her mother and the neighbor compelled her into the exploitative act against her will. The girl attempted to escape the situation once by staying with a friend for three days, but was beaten upon returning home and forced back into the same circumstances.

Shaken by the revelations, the school administration quickly alerted the police, who have registered a case against the accused. Charges have been filed under sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including those related to rape, selling a child for prostitution, and provisions under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The investigation is ongoing, with officials taking the matter very seriously due to the victim’s age and the gravity of the allegations.

Though prostitution laws in India are complex, the forced involvement of minors and acts like trafficking and exploitation carry strict legal penalties. The accused could face severe punishment under laws such as the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act (ITPA) and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, which criminalize coercion and sexual exploitation of vulnerable individuals.
